Before symbols mean anything, the chart has to know which grid squares actually hold a stitch and which are blank background. Erase View gives you manual control of that set, so your symbols and counts start from clean data.

Switch into Erase View from the top of Set Symbols. Symbol editing is unavailable while you clean up, so everything here changes which grid squares are stitchable, not the symbols themselves.

Controls at a Glance

Erase View

Erase View with numbered markers for the view switch, colour key, chart, toolbar and block-brush controls

  1. View switch: return to Symbol View when the populated grid squares are correct.
  2. Colour key: shows how many grid squares are empty, populated without a symbol or populated with a confirmed symbol. Select a target icon to find the next square in that category.
  3. Chart workspace: tap or drag across grid squares to change whether they are populated.
  4. Display toolbar: fit or change the chart view while working. Symbol-specific controls are unavailable in Erase View.
  5. Block brush: preview the current brush size, change its width and height, or clear all populated grid squares that have no confirmed symbol.
Brush and cleanup controls

Close-up of the Erase View block-brush controls, including the brush preview, width and height buttons, and Clear All Unassigned bin icon

From top to bottom:

  • White preview and size: show the block covered by the brush. The brush can be up to 11 by 11 grid squares, and Markup remembers the last size you used.
  • Right arrow: cycles through the available brush widths.
  • Up arrow: cycles through the available brush heights.
  • Bin icon - Clear All Unassigned: removes every populated grid square that does not have a confirmed symbol, across every chart page. Markup tells you how many grid squares will be removed and asks you to confirm before continuing.

This is particularly useful with a noisy or poor-quality chart. Concentrate on setting up and checking the real symbols first, then use the bin icon to remove the remaining unassigned grid squares in one action. On a large chart, this can be much faster than clearing them manually. You can undo the complete cleanup if necessary.

Bulk Tools

Clear All Unassigned
Use the bin icon after you have finished setting up and checking the symbols you want to keep. It clears every remaining populated grid square without a confirmed symbol across every page. Markup counts them, asks you to confirm, and records the complete cleanup as one undoable change.
Image-scan sensitivity
In Rescan Symbols, adjust the percentage to control which grid squares are treated as populated, then run the scan across the whole chart. Lower values find fewer grid squares; higher values find more. The rescan replaces existing symbol work and warns you first.
Undo / Redo
Every erase flows through one history: brush strokes, the bulk clear and the contrast re-derive. Any of it can be undone or redone.

Did you know?

  • You can give a colour to blank grid squares. Use the block brush to make empty squares populated, then select one on the chart. Matching background squares can then be assigned together.
  • Blank grid squares you add here count in your statistics once you mark them, just like any printed symbol.
  • You can correct mistakes. Brush strokes and the bulk clear use the same undo and redo history.
