On this page: General checks | Android | Apple | Still stuck?

If you have already paid for Markup but see a licence or subscription warning, work through these checks to help the app recognise your purchase.

Markup periodically checks your purchase with the App Store or Google Play. A warning can appear when a valid purchase cannot be confirmed, even if you have already paid. You may be able to continue for a limited time, but please resolve the warning rather than ignore it.

Start with the general checks below, then follow the section for your device. For the app's subscription controls, see Subscription: how to view your status and refresh a purchase from the Profile tab.

Subscription Checks at a Glance

General Checks

Check your internet connection: Connect to working Wi-Fi or mobile data so Markup can check your purchase with the store.
Confirm the purchase: Check the store subscription record and your purchase receipt. Look for the current status and renewal or expiry date. A free app download entry, including one showing 0.00, is not by itself proof of a paid licence.
Use the purchasing account: Check that the App Store or Google Play is using the account that made the purchase. If you have several accounts, check the receipt to identify the right one.
Check the device platform: An Apple purchase applies to Apple devices using the purchasing account. A Google Play purchase applies to Android devices using that account. A separate purchase is needed to use Markup on both platforms.
Update Markup: Install the latest available version from the App Store or Google Play, then reopen the app.

Refresh Your Purchase

Refresh in Markup: Open the Profile tab and select Refresh Purchase in the Subscription panel. Older versions may call this Restore Purchase. Allow the store check to finish.
Restart and try again: If the warning remains, close and reopen Markup. You can also restart your device, confirm the purchasing account is still selected in the store, then refresh the purchase again.
Compare another device: If you have another phone or tablet on the same platform and purchasing account, try refreshing there. Whether it works on one device or neither is useful information for support.
Check a new device carefully: A new or replacement device may be using a different store account. Confirm the account before trying further fixes. If the store asks you to sign in again, use the account shown on your receipt.
If the store says you are already subscribed: Dismiss the purchase screen and reopen Markup. Start with Refresh Purchase when troubleshooting an active subscription. If a screen asks you to approve another charge, stop and contact support rather than completing another purchase.

Android: Google Play Checks

Find your subscription: Open Google Play > profile picture > Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions. Select Markup and check its status and expiry or renewal date. Google Play subscription help explains the available options.
Check the account and receipt: Use the profile picture in Google Play to check the selected Google account. For the payment record, open Payments & subscriptions > Budget & history. Check any other accounts you use if the purchase is missing.
Check your device is signed in: Review devices connected to your Google account to confirm the new device is present. Use Google account email help if you are unsure which email belongs to the account.
Check renewal and payment status: If renewal is off, check the expiry date. A cancelled subscription can remain usable for the period already paid for. Do not turn renewal back on just to prove that you have a current purchase.
If Google Play is not responding: Restart the device and check that Google Play is up to date. Follow Google's in-app purchase troubleshooting for connection, payment and store checks, then return to Markup and refresh your purchase.

Apple: Account And Subscription Checks

Find your subscription: Open Settings > your name > Subscriptions, then select Markup. Check the status and renewal or expiry date. Apple subscription help shows where to find these settings.
Check the purchasing Apple Account: Check the account used for the App Store under Settings > your name > Media & Purchases. It must be the account used to buy the licence. If you use different Apple Accounts for iCloud and purchases, check the purchasing account rather than assuming the name at the top of Settings is sufficient.
Find the receipt: Use Apple purchase history to find the paid purchase. If it is missing, check whether you bought it with a different Apple Account.
Review the renewal date: Check whether the subscription renews or expires on the date shown. Turning renewal off is different from the paid period having ended. Use Refresh Purchase to check recognition; renewing or resubscribing changes your billing choice.
If restoring still fails: Follow Apple's help for missing in-app purchases to check the purchasing account, purchase permissions and device restart steps.

Apple: Purchase And Payment Messages

In-app purchases are not allowed: Check Settings > Screen Time > Apps & Websites > App Store > In-app Purchases. Older versions may show Content & Privacy Restrictions > iTunes & App Store Purchases instead. If you manage the device, check that purchases are allowed. Otherwise ask the parent or device administrator. Apple's purchase restriction guide explains the controls; names can vary by software version.
Your purchase could not be completed: Check for payment or account verification requests. Open Settings > your name > Payment & Shipping to review the App Store payment method, rather than only checking Wallet. Apple payment method help explains how to review or update it.
If you use Family Sharing: If the family organiser pays for shared purchases, ask them to check any payment verification or billing issue. Family Sharing is one possible cause, not the explanation for every failed purchase. Apple's billing and verification help covers these messages.
If you use Apple Account balance: Check the balance belongs to the purchasing account and review Apple's requirements for an additional payment method. Apple Account balance help explains what the balance can pay for and the limits for subscriptions and family members.
Ask Apple about a charge: Use Report a Problem to review a purchase or request help with a charge. For wider payment issues, see Apple billing support.

If The Warning Remains

Reinstall only on an empty new installation: On a new device with no projects loaded, reinstalling can be a last step after the checks above. Do not uninstall an installation containing projects as a troubleshooting shortcut. Ask support how to protect your work first.

Did you know?

  • Markup does not handle your card details: the App Store or Google Play manages billing and payment changes.
  • Removing an Android app does not cancel its subscription: manage the subscription separately in Google Play if you want to stop future renewals.
