Symbols and Highlighting controls how the symbol you are stitching stands out on the chart, and which symbols appear in the symbol panel. Make the current symbol impossible to miss and keep the list focused on what is left.

These options live in the project settings screen. The symbol panel itself is covered in The Symbol Panel.

Highlighting the Selected Symbol

Fill style

[Screenshot: a chart with one symbol highlighted, showing outline vs filled styles side by side]

Choose Outline (border only) or Highlight (filled) for every cell of the selected symbol, so you see them clearly, your way.
Shape
Show the highlight as a square or a circle, whichever marker you prefer.
Ignore marked cells
Skip highlighting stitches you have already marked, so the highlight shows only what is left to stitch.

Colours and the Symbol List

Symbol search colour
The colour used when finding a symbol on the chart or the key, so you spot the symbol you are hunting instantly.
Unmarked symbol colour
The highlight colour for unmarked symbols in the counts list, separating pending stitches from finished ones.
Hide zero-count symbols
Drop symbols with none left on the current page from the panel. Less clutter as you near the finish.

Did you know?

  • Hiding finished symbols was a direct tester request. As a page fills up, the symbol list shrinks to only what still needs stitching.
  • Highlighting works with guide bars. Restrict highlighting to your working region so a busy chart never distracts you. See the Guide Bars guide.
  • Symbol search is powerful. It can recognise symbols even with backstitch over them, and search by colour on colour charts.
